UMES to Assist Revamp Hospitality & Tourism Industry

The University of Maryland, Eastern Shore (UMES), USA, will assist Technical Universities to revamp the hospitality and Tourism industry in Ghana through a capacity building programme.
The programme which includes an exchange of staff and students, is aimed at tackling the shortfalls in the sector.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between UMES and Accra Technical University (ATU) together with other Technical Universities and Polytechnics at the Accra City Hotel on Thursday 8, June.
The Chair and Professor in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism of UMES, Prof. Emmanuel Acquah who elaborated on the agreement, said the collaboration would stimulate beneficial outcome for stakeholders.
He, therefore called on stakeholders, both public and private to actively get involved and work towards its success.
Prof. Ralph Kingston Asabere, Chairman of Accra Technical University, who chaired the event, said it would create the bridge between industry and the academia, and contribute significantly to the country’s socio economic development.
He was hopeful that the agreement would result in the importation and acquisition of skills.
Prof. Emmanuel Sakyi, Chairman of Vice-Chancellors and Rectors of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Ghana, stressed the need to revamp the industry through sustained training and certification of industry players.
He said the sector was bedeviled with lack of capacity building, innovation and creativity.
The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Catherine Afeku, said government would develop domestic tourism through introduction of Ghanaian culture into school curricula so as to psyche the minds of staff and students
Hon. Barbara Asher Ayisi, Deputy Minister of Education in Charge of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), said her Ministry was poised to revamping all Technical and Vocational institutions in the country to put them into a hub of excellence and global attraction.
Faculty members from the Technical Universities who had successfully passed the Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE) were presented with lapel pins and certificates.
