Technical Universities, Polytechnics and UMES Sign Agreement
Eight Technical Universities and two Polytechnics in Ghana have signed an articulation agreement with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), USA.
The agreement which was signed at the Accra City Hotel on Thursday 8, June, for the Hospitality and Tourism Faculties in the respective institutions includes an exchange programme which concentrates on vocational and training capacities for staff and students.
The discussion which led to the signing of the agreement centered on the opening of the frontiers of developmental progression in the industry.
The agreement is believed to tremendously accelerate growth and ensure the development in the sector. The leader of the UMES delegation, Prof Emmanuel Acquah who signed on behalf his university, touched on specifics of the articulation agreement and said the parties to the agreement were not bound by any financial commitments.
He said the exchange of students for research; training and exposure in general would be of much benefit to them.
Prof Acquah was optimistic that the partnership entered into would mark the beginning of essential curriculum development between UMES and their Ghanaian counterparts.
The Deputy Minister of Education in Charge of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Hon. Barbara Asher Ayisi hinted that the Ministry is poised to revamping all Technical and Vocational institutions in the country to position them into a hub of excellence and global attraction
On her part, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Catherine Afeku said tourism was an essential vehicle which could be harnessed by developing countries to speed up their socio-economic transformation.
She called for the need to provide the necessary skills and training opportunities in hospitality and allied services to hype international standards.
Prof Elis Otoo, the former Vice- Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology was praised for his invaluable contribution through which the partnership came to existence.
